One Share on Social Media = One Day of WiFi for Students!
This year for #GivingTuesday, we will be supporting our schools, teachers and youth organizations that have worked so hard to keep students working towards their futures in spite of the COVID-19 pandemic. With what seems like endless obstacles over the past 8 months, our educators have been tackling new teaching strategies via video call, virtual management of students assignments and performance, collecting and distributing basic materials for student success and most importantly ensuring every student has healthy WiFi solutions for remote learning. This is where we wanted to lend a hand.
What is #GivingTuesday?
Giving Tuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. It is a movement to create an international day of giving at the beginning of the Christmas and holiday season. Giving Tuesday was started in 2012 by the 92nd Street Y and the United Nations Foundation as a response to commercialization and consumerism in the post-Thanksgiving season (Black Friday and Cyber Monday).
How is Skyroam Participating?
Prior to Giving Tuesday, Skyroam gifted over 40 hotspots to local schools and youth organizations in the Bay Area - Edgewood Center for Children and Families, Francophone Charter School of Oakland, and San Mateo County Sheriff's Activities League. Now we want to be sure that these students have all the data they need to continue learning outside the classroom well into 2021! For every social media share or repost of our #GivingTuesday: Raise your hand for WiFi content, we will donate 1 GB of high-speed data to our sponsored students (up to 200 GB). Each share will roughly equate to 1 school day of WiFi per student!
Donation Partners:
Edgewood Center for Children and Families:
Each year, Edgewood helps thousands of individuals and loved ones in the Bay Area who struggle with mental illness and behavioral health issues by providing both in-patient and out-patient treatment and prevention programs that make it easier for children and their families to overcome their challenges. As shifting to online learning would be difficult enough for any student, Edgewood students have had an even more difficult transition to make given their circumstances. Solis hotspots will provide an extra layer of support for both the staff and students working to stay connected for both regular school curriculum and ongoing treatment plans.
Francophone Charter School of Oakland
The Francophone Charter School is a French immersion elementary charter school supporting Kindergarten students through 8th grade. The mission of the Francophone Charter School of Oakland is to provide a dual-immersion curriculum to a diverse community of students in efforts to develop bilingual and bi-literate global citizens who are open-minded and value intellectual curiosity, personal integrity and creativity. Similar to most schools across the nation, the Covid pandemic has forced Francophone students and staff to take their learning online. Skyroam hotspots will help support students without reliable WiFi connection or access to the internet at all.
San Mateo County Sheriff's Activities League
SAL was founded in 1997 by former Sheriff Don Horsley with the purpose of strengthening relationships between youth, deputies, and communities to aid in the intervention and prevention of juvenile delinquency in San Mateo County through positive, dynamic programs. A representative from the organization reached out to Skyroam after noticing that a portion of their youth did not have the technology or quiet workspace to do their school work. Even in offering their office space to students, SAL's public WiFi simply could not support all of the students in need. Our hotspots are going to help the kids who need WiFi most!
